D-Day to Berlin

From the hard-won victory on the Normandy beaches, the liberation of Brussels and the deep-water port of Antwerp, to the ill-fated 'Operation Market Garden' – follow the route of Montgomery's 21st Army across the Rhine to the battle for Berlin.

Holiday Itinerary

9-Day Break

  • Day 1 – Arrive at your hotel in Caen for an overnight stay.
  • Day 2 – D-Day and The Breakout (included). Our day will start at Sword Beach, part of the D-Day Landings in Normandy. We will then discover ‘Operation Goodwood’, one of the main battles to capture the city of Caen. Next, we’ll follow the breakout from Normandy via the Falaise Gap and onto the crossing of the River Seine at Vernon. Overnight stay in Amiens. B
  • Day 3 – The German Retreat (included). En route to Arnhem for an overnight stay, we re-live the hectic retreat of the German army as it fell back to the Dutch/Belgian border, before picking up the Airborne Corridor to the doomed ‘bridge too far’ at Arnhem. B
  • Day 4 – A Bridge Too Far and Rhine Crossings (included). Today, we spend time in the Arnhem area, visiting some of the ‘drop zones’, the War Cemetery at Oosterbeek and the famous 'John Frost Bridge' before moving on to the story of the Rhine Crossings. Following the route of the British troops as they approached the mighty River Rhine, we travel via Kleve and the Reichswald War Cemetery, then onto Wesel. We continue to Hannover for a two-night stay. B
  • Day 5 – Liberation and Surrender (included). A day designed to give us an opportunity to look at the British advance through Germany – a journey that would include many unforeseen horrors, including the Concentration Camp at Bergen-Belsen. We will also move up to Luneburg Heath to visit the area where the Germans surrendered to the British in May 1945. B
  • Day 6 – To Berlin for a two-night stay via Magdeburg, the area where the Americans linked up with Soviet Forces. B
  • Day 7 – The Great Prize (included). Spending the day in and around the Berlin area, we study the Soviet advance into Berlin and the fall of this great city. Our day will include visits to Soviet War Memorials, the Fuhrer’s bunker area, Reichstag, Bendlerblock and the Berlin War Cemetery. We also visit Karlshorst Soviet HQ, where Marshal Zhukov arranged the final unconditional surrender of all German armed forces. B
  • Day 8 – We travel to our hotel in Belgium for an overnight stay. B
  • Day 9 – Journey to Calais then return home. B
