The Green Fields Beyond
Our final anniversary tour of 2007 looks at the Battle of Cambrai – the first mass use of tanks in WW1 when more than 400 tanks supported by artillery and infantry smashed the German Hindenburg Line.
Holiday Itinerary
4-Day Break
- Day 1 – Travel from your chosen joining point to your hotel in the Lille area for a three night stay.
- Day 2 – Havrincourt & Bourlon Wood. We begin with a look at the fighting on 20th November 1917 and start in the sector around Moeuvres where the 56th (London) Division fought. At Havrincourt we see the wood, and follow the attack of the 62nd (West Riding) Division from their memorial to the ground near Anneux, their final objective and then move on to Bourlon Wood. We then visit the important 'right hook' of operations in 1917. We see the ground at La Vacquerie and Lateau Wood where the 12th (Eastern) Division fought, and also look at the German counter-attack, seeing where the Guards Division stood their ground at Gouzeaucourt and Gonnelieu. We end the day at Welsh Ridge where we follow the Royal Naval Division, and examine a forgotten truce of the last winter of the war. B
- Day 3 – Anniversary & Cambrai Memorial. Today we will attend any special events, and also visit the Cambrai Memorial at Louverval, spend lunchtime in Cambrai and visit cemeteries in the area of the city itself. Later we also see the Flesquieres area along with the grave of war poet E.A.Mackintosh and also the Newfoundland Memorial at Masnieres. B
- Day 4 – Free-time before our return to Calais and our journey home. B
