Hi--My Grandfathers cousin (Reginald Hadley)died of wounds in April 1915 at Aldershot military hospital. He is buried in a family plot in a small welsh village called Nelson.

The question that my family would like to know is why was he in this regiment and not a Welsh(Welch) one ---and also does anybody have any info on the first use of gas during ww1 as again the family rumour is that he may have been gassed.

Hoping someone can help.

Regards

G

Hi - I can't find a trace of this man on the Medal Index Cards, which indicates he did not go overseas in WW1. The 5th Dorsets was a New Army battalion raised in 1914, and didn't leave the UK until July 1915 when it sailed for Gallipoli.

For more info on the 5th Dorsets see:

Your man must have died in training, of sickness or otherwise. He doesn't appear to have died of wounds, or ever have served overseas.
