In September 1916 my great uncle was mortally wounded whilst attacking the Stuff Redoubt on the Somme.Records indicate that he was a volunteer who joined the 9th Battalion of the West Yorkshire Regiment.

I have recently come across a photograph which we think is him but the cap badge appears to be that of the East Yorkshire Regiment. Is it possible that there may have been some sort of transfer from the East to the West Yorkshire Regiment, perhaps during training.

Whilst I would like the photograph to be him I need to be sure. Can anyone offer any advice.

Hi

My first instincts would be to find out what Regt he was in when he died. You can find it here:

http://www.cwgc.org/

Obviously if the 2 match...then good. All too often men changed Regt's during the war. It was not uncommon, and depended on quite a few factors.

Another option is to check out his MIC (Medal Index Card) here:

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/medals.asp

This will list the Regiments he was in, but you have to pay a small fee.

Try these first before you move on to the more expensive options.

Cheers

Hi.

He was in the West Yorkshire Regiment when he died. His grave is at Southwick, Sunderland.

As he was born and raised in Sunderland I have often wondered how he finished up in the West Yorkshire Regiment and not the DLI.

In fact the East Yorkshire Regiment would be closer to home than West Yorkshire Regiment. Is it possible he could have switched. Could this have happened during training?

If you post his details, I will see if his Medal Index Card has been posted on Ancestry - they have just added colour scans of the records saved by the WFA a few years ago.

Hi Paul, I hope you remember me. I have been on 3 leger battle field tours when you were our guide, the last one was Passchendale Remembered in October last year. I was the one always asking questions.

In response to your email, you carried out a search for me a couple of years ago.

His details are as follows

Private Samuel Waller. 18390

9th Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment

11th Northern Division

Died 4th October 1916 aged 21.

The soldier in the photograph we have just found shows that of a young man of about 19 to 20 and with a resemblance to the Waller family but the cap badge is definitely not that of the West Yorkshire Regiment. I think it is the East Yorkshire Regiment.

You have been of great help in the past and hope you can be of assistance on this occasion.

They haven't added his Medal Index Card to Ancestry yet.

Did you get one with the material I found for you? If so, they that might mention it. Otherwise, this may be someone else.

Can you post the photo?

Hi Paul,

Please see above the photograph I have been enquiring about. As you can see the cap badge is not that of the West Yorkshire Regiment. I think it might be the East Yorkshire Regiment.

If you have any comments they would be much appreciated.

Paul

Sorry forgot to mention that I did receive a copy of the medal index card which indicates Samuel Waller as being in the West Yorkshire Regiment. Service No. 18390

Well, he is certainly in the East Yorks in that photo. You can see the badge quite clearly. It could be that he served at home with them, which is why there is no mention on the Medal Index Card - that shows overseas units only.
