We're going on the 'Operation Market Garden' trip in September, but have been told that some of the itinerary is due to be changed to incorporate 'commemorative ceremonies.'
Does anyone know what will be chopped/added to the tour, as we may consider making our own alternative arrangements around the ceremonies (I appreciate there will be veterans on this anniversary trip who will want to attend the ceremonies, but we would rather be out and about experiencing some of the local culture and life).

Hi Mark, everyone to their own of course, but i would relish the chance to be with vets at their monuments.

You could of course have a chat with the Leger booking office, and possibly swap to a tour in October.

Arnhem is a very modern city, similiar to a lot of British and German big towns, and from what i saw , it does not offer very much in the way of local lifestyle tourist opportunities.

They have an Arnhem area tourist office that is available on the web, but again most "tourists" are in the Arnhem area for one thing, and thats the sites and monuments of "Market Garden".

All the best, Phil..

Hi Mark, On the Saturday we will plan to take in the commemorations at the memorials at Helsum and Ginkel Heath, the site of the parachute drops on the 17th/ 18th September 1944 by 1st Airbourne Division. In the afternoon we will visit the Nijimegen area and visit the commonwealth war graves cemetery at Groesbeek Heights.
On Sunday we will hopefully attend the commemorations at Oosterbeek cemetery where the fallen of operation 'Market Garden' will be remembered by their comrades and The Parachute Regiment. In the afternoon we will visit Oosterbeek Museum, Oosterbeek church, Westaboeing heights and then continue to John Frost bridge and conclude the tour with the story of the action to holid its northern ramp.
However, please note that it may be necessary, subject to local events/ traffic/ timings to alter the order of, or add/ delete items to/from the itinerary. I hope this helps, Victoria
